Why do console side buttons fail as pinball flippers?

Identify the exact controller and adapter chain first. Legacy Tankstick / Tankstick MAX two-player console connections and original Arcade2TV-XR USB Pinball/Solo Mode are not the same setup. A two-player path can assign side controls to separate player/Back inputs, so in-game remapping alone may not provide a single player's two flippers. Do not describe this as an unavoidable limitation of every X-Arcade controller.

Original Arcade2TV-XR: side buttons exit the Xbox Pinball FX mapping menu

This branch is for the original Arcade2TV-XR / Tankstick VR, not legacy Tankstick, Tankstick MAX or integrated XR MAX. A customer on Xbox Series S reported that a two-player adapter arrangement made the side buttons act as Back and exit the mapping screen. The customer explicitly confirmed the following support-directed single-player path worked:

  1. Identify the controller, installed firmware and Xbox-compatible Brook Wingman model. Use the current original XR firmware guide for the correct component/dongle family. Do not install Gen2 files on Gen1 hardware.
  2. On firmware with Pinball/Solo Mode, connect USB-B data and hold P1 MODE for about five seconds to select blinking purple. The reviewed reply distinguished the v2.27 standard branch from the Gen2-compatible v3.62-or-later branch; those historical numbers are not permission to mix component versions.
  3. Connect the controller's USB-B directly to the appropriate Xbox Wingman, then the adapter to the console. This single-player path does not use the old DB9/2-in-1 chain.
  4. Test both flippers in the same Pinball FX game. In the reviewed Pinball/Solo layout the side buttons provide LB/RB and both joystick sections belong to one player, rather than separate player/back commands.

The result confirms that customer's setup, not every Brook adapter or every console/game revision. If the buttons still exit the menu, report exact controller/adapter models, firmware, selected profile and connection chain; do not prescribe wiring modifications or repeatedly attempt mapping the same Back command. The older dedicated v2.23_3 green-profile instructions are a different firmware layout and must not override purple Pinball/Solo instructions for later firmware.

Legacy Tankstick and Tankstick MAX

For a legacy two-player console-adapter setup, consult the exact model's guide or support before selecting a keyboard-to-gamepad converter or a wiring change. Do not apply original-XR firmware to these models. Prior model-specific advice discussed keyboard-to-gamepad conversion and Tankstick MAX internal rewiring, but this original-XR case does not validate those modifications or define a safe wiring procedure. Ask support to identify the board and provide the applicable instructions before internal work.

PC games/emulators can provide keyboard/controller assignments in software. That is separate from a console's adapter mapping and from the original XR single-player profile. For a two-player console setup, follow its supported 2-in-1/Brook adapter arrangement rather than assuming that two adapters merge both players into one gamepad.
